Senate Page Day Four: All Good Times Come to an End... :(

As written on May 28th, 2015!

"Today's the last day! Man, it sucks that this week has to end so soon! Mrs. McLeod had to go to Norfolk, Virginia as soon as she dropped me and Macy off at the General Assembly. Since I am looking forward to coming back and working as a page, I will be sure to call her up!

Since all the committee meetings were cancelled due to the long session (due  to begin at 11am), Mr. Perdue seen this as a great time for us to have an open discussion about anything that caught our eye this week. In yesterday's session, the sergeant-in-arms were asked to conceal the doors and the pages were asked to be seated. When we asked Mr. Perdue about this, he says that if there is a deceased person that is to be discussed (in this case: fallen soldiers), then it is proper to be in a seated position so that everyone is attentive to the tribute.

Today's session began at 11am, and ended at 2pm (with a thirty minute recess in between the meeting). Here were the bills that were discussed throughout the session:

  • HB 347 - Money Graham County Occupancy Tax
  • HB 70 - Charlotte Firefighters' Retirement
  • HB 909 - Sale of Antique Spirituous Liquor (ABC Omnibus Legislation)
  • HB 222 - Retention Elections/ Appellate Division
  • HB 465 - 72 Hrs. informed consent (abortion)
  • HB 640 - Outdoor Heritage Act (Sunday Hunting)
  • HB 495 - OSHR Modernization/Technical Changes

72 Hours informed consent.

As we all know, abortion is on of the more controversial topics being discussed in American society today. You have a moral view of it, religious view, experience view (whether it being a woman struggling to overcome traumatic experiences of rape or any other form of sexual abuse), and then you have views of those who do not know of this (which they should, but still...). So, when this bill was put forth on the table to be discussed, of course the women of the senate were going to voice their opinions. In particularly, Senator Smith-Ingram moved that the informed consent time period be changed from 72 hours to 48 hours in the State of North Carolina. Shockingly enough, when the bill was voted on, it did not pass. However, an amendment was sent forward, so maybe there can be some sort of an agreement about the bill.

Saying Goodbye...

Around 3:30pm, we had to say our goodbyes, but not before me and several other pages (Caroline, Mary Louise, Madison and Ellie) tok pictures all around the Legislative Building. Afterwards, we were asked back to the Conference Room, where we did two evaluations: one on our experience and one for our host family. We also voted for the "Page of the Week", which turned out to be my roommate, Macy! After Mr. Perdue made his goodbye speech, we packed up and we said our goodbyes. :(

WHAT A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!!! :)

What a great experience I had! Hope you guys enjoy reading!
