My Fandom: Steven Universe! ❤
Hello, everyone! It's been about a good week or so, and let me tell ya: it's been a BUSY one. With all this schoolwork and babysitting stuff, I am literally going left field. Good thing I finally have time to sit down on my butt and type down this blog post for you guys. :) Today's blog post is me basically ranting about my love for Steven Universe, a show on Cartoon Network that I have watched since the very first episode. I guess you can stay that I am a huge fanatic. Welp, here it goes....
Steve Universe is a coming-of-age story about a boy of the same name. Steven Quartz Universe is half-gem, half-human: his mother being the gem Rose Quartz and his father being a former one man band, Greg Universe. Mr. Greg Universe that is. The show was created by the ever awesome Rebecca Sugar, who has previously worked for another favorite show of mine, Adventure Time, and it is the first Cartoon Network series to be created by a woman. The show is set in the fictional Beach City, where Steven lives in a temple on the beach with The Crystal Gems: Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. Steven is just learning how to fully control his powers, and more about his mother Rose Quartz, who gave up her physical form in order to give birth to Steven. He also goes on missions with the Crystal Gems, which he lands himself in trouble from time to time, but as the theme song suggests: "... if you think we can't, we'll always find a way!"
What I enjoy about this show is the Sci-Fi aspect to the show - and this is where I begin to fangirl about the anatomy of being a gem. The Crystal Gems are a team of magical beings who are the self-appointed guardians of the universe. It is up to Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and of course, Steven to protect humanity from the highly advanced villains of Home World. Rose Quartz was the original leader of The Crystal Gems, but as I said earlier, she gave up her physical form in order to have Steven. Since then, Garnet has taken on the role as leader, with Pearl stepping in to have her voice heard. Right now, their biggest enemy is Peridot, who is on Earth to keep track of "The Cluster". However, they manged to disrobe Peridot from her high-tech gear, and now she is - as Steven says - "an angry piece of pie". She knows information about this "cluster", but she refuses to give out information until she finally decides to spill the beans...
Fusions are also my favorite parts of the show! My favorite fusions are: Sugllite (Garnet/Amethyst), Sardonyx (Garnet/Pearl), Opal (Pearl/Amethyst), Alexandrite (Garnet/Amethyst/Pearl) and Stevonnie, the fusion of Steven and Connie. Connie is Steven's best friend and love interest, and it made me very happy when the two first fused in "Alone Together". Gems fusing with humans is still new territory, and the two fusing was unprecedented! Also, Garnet is a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire (LBGT reference), who in turn are deeply in love with each other, which is why Garnet stays AWESOME for a very long time. Pearl, although she has funny ways of showing it, still has feelings for Steven's mother Rose, even after her demise (another LBGT reference). Finally, Amethyst is a wild child at heart, and eats as if her life depends on it, despite the fact that gems do not need to eat. Amethyst is also from a kindergarten, which grew gems until it was destroyed during a gem war.
I LOVE this show, because Steven is just a normal, average boy, despite being a gem. He is always learning new things, and he usually finds surprising ways to save the day, despite his shortcomings. Original songs from the show also take the cake, and here's a playlist of soundtracks from the show so far! All of the songs are extended, just to give you a heads up. This playlist features songs from the show's theme to Garnet and Amethyst's Sugllite fusion in Season 1. ENJOY!
